The Need For An Eye-cream? March 1st, 2018

Most people believe that eye-creams are formulated differently then creams for the rest of your face.

However, these is no research or evidence, that we have ever been able to find at least, to indicate why the area around the eyes would need different ingredients then the rest of the face needs.

And if you carefully compare the ingredients in face creams and eye creams, you will usually find they are not that different.

However, many cosmetic companies know that if you think your eye area needs a special cream, they can sell you two creams instead of one, and positioning it as a ‘specialty’ cream they can sell you the eye cream in a smaller jar or tube for a higher price, which adds a lot more to their profit.

Of course, there are exceptions. Sometimes depending on the brand, and depending on if your skin around your eyes is actually different then elsewhere on your face, you may want to use two separate products. But in most cases you likely need one, and this is something that many people are misinformed about.

Side-note:

Another thing that many people are misinformed about is the use of day and night creams. There is no evidence we can find for why your skin would need a different treatment in the day then in the night. In many cases, this is unfortunately just another way many cosmetic companies can add more profits to their bottom.

So, you can save the money and stick with just one cream for both day and night!

The only difference that does make sense between a day and night cream is the addition of SPF in the day cream. However, as we discuss in another article here, in most cases we recommend you use a separate SPF anyway.

The Importance Of The Packaging March 1st, 2018

Packaging is far more important to the effectiveness of the product than most people realize.

Here’s how:

Many high end products use jar packaging for example. A big reason is that jar packaging can look very good.

However, there is a big problem with jar packaging:

Many key ingredients like anti-oxidants, skin-identical ingredients and plant extracts become unstable in the presence of air.

Jar packaging expose air to enter into the formulation every time you open it, causing the very ingredients that make the product work in the first place, to deteriorate.

In the end, what good are the best ingredients if they spoil and lose their effectiveness?

Further, with jar packaging you end up sticking your fingers into the product, which can allow bacteria to enter and further harm the ingredients.

That’s why the best type of packaging for your anti-wrinkle treatment is airtight packaging, such as a tube.

You also don’t want to use packaging that is clear, because light can enter which can also cause key ingredients to break down.

A pump dispenser is also an option, though often times you end up having a lot of cream get wasted by getting stuck on the bottom of the container, and the pumps themselves can sometimes get stuck.

The Importance of Primer & Foundation March 1st, 2018

Priming

Just as a painter uses primer to create a good base for paint, you need to apply a good primer product before adding foundation and makeup to your skin.

Primers are often in the form of a cream or gel and are designed to minimize your pores to create a nice base for your foundation. They are very important to use if you plan on being in hot weather, because without a good primer, your makeup can wear off and move out of place.

Generally your primer should be applied after moisturizing your skin. This will create a smooth surface, and help blend your foundation easily with your skin tone. Some primers will even help with the challenges of uneven skin tones by hiding age spots, preventing breakouts, and evening out the dryness of your skin.

Certain primers contain silica (silicone dioxide) which controls the shine of your skin to eliminate the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

The Right Foundation

Just as important as finding the right primer is finding the correct foundation for your skin. Foundation is key in pulling everything together for a flawless makeup application.

When looking for a proper foundation, an important component is aiming for a product that is closest to your skin tone. Additionally, you should go for a foundation that suits your type of skin whether it be oily, dry, or a combination.

Words like “oil-free” or “oil-control” in a liquid or powder foundation are good for oily skin, and phrases like “hydrating” or “moisture-rich” within stick and liquid foundations work well for dry skin. For combination skin, a cream to powder base will be effective so that you can distribute oil-absorbing makeup exactly where you need to without leaving visible lines.

Having the right foundation in addition to a good primer will set you up for success. When choosing both remember to keep in mind your skin tone, skin type, the climate of the day, and what you are planning to accomplish with your makeup appearance. You are now ready to pick the right products, get out there and look beautiful!

Sun Damage & Photoaging March 1st, 2018

Sun damage

Sun damage is an enormous problem which the majority of the world has to face daily. People with lighter complexions are especially at risk of being harmed by the powerful sun’s UV rays, however people with darker complexions are also vulnerable to the sun’s effects on skin.

Besides dehydration, (which is one of the leading causes of accelerated aging) the sun poses many more serious threats than one might think. Skin cancer is the highest diagnosed cancer in the United States, affecting more than 2 million people annually. There are many different types of skin cancer, with melanoma in particular being one of the most dangerous. Early signs of skin cancer developing typically are a bump, blemish, or mole that is changing shape, bleeding, or growing- if you notice any of these signs it is imperative that you contact a doctor immediately.

SPF

“SPF” is an acronym many of us may hear or read about, but few understand. It stands for “sun protection factor”. Maybe you’ve been told to seek out the sunscreen with the highest amount of SPF, and this is a wise search. The higher amount of SPF, the more protection! Doctors actually recommend wearing sunscreen no matter what time of year it is, or what the weather is like.

SPF may be the only thing between you and harmful UV rays damaging your skin, therefore it is crucial to find a sunscreen with a high amount of SPF. Creams with over SPF 30 are ideal, and will protect your skin from sunburn as well from developing sun spots, freckles, and blotchy red patches. However, even a product with SPF 15 will provide a good amount of protection. Keep in mind to re-apply sunscreen after exiting water, as many of the effective ingredients can be washed off easily. Re-application every two hours is also wise, despite staying out of water.

Photoaging

If you are looking for a product which reduces wrinkles, and provides significant protection from the sun, SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic may be what you need. As one of the only products of its kind, C E Ferulic protects the skin against harmful UVA & B rays as well as boosts collagen within our skin to protect against photoaging. A simple combination, it contains ferulic acid, vitamin C, and vitamin E. C E Ferulic is one of the only products which increases firmness of the skin, while protecting the skin from sun damage.

Skin Tightening Tips March 1st, 2018

As if wrinkles weren’t enough, you can also add sagging skin to the never-ending laundry list of beauty issues that come with getting older. Over the course of time, our bodies begin to go through some very overwhelming changes. We’ve all had that day when we felt like those fine lines came overnight and cheeks seem to hang a little more than usual. But alas, all hope is not lost…:) I’m here to help you tighten up that sagging skin. Once you understand what causes the skin to sag, you’ll see that there are plenty of ways to prevent and repair it.

1 Weight Loss

One of the main causes of sagging skin is weight loss. As we age, we begin to lose the fat responsible for giving our face the volume that makes it look plump and youthful. This is what causes the skin to become loose and start to droop around the mouth and neck, creating wrinkles.

A great skin tightening tip is to Drink 8-10 glasses of water every day that helps improve sagging facial skin.Water maintains muscle tone and prevents dehydration. It helps your muscles contract, plump up tissues and it gives you a youthful glow. A diet rich in healthy fats such as the ones found in avocado and olive oil is also an important factor in maintaining tighter facial skin. Essential fats prevent the oxidation of collagen. Eating a low-fat or no-fat diet will, over time, produce visible signs of aging.

How you eat also has a lot to do with how your body looks after it undergoes dramatic weight loss. There are two main ingredients that your body needs in order to keep your skin plump and elastic; collagen and elastin. Foods that are rich in protein, such as milk, beans, lentils, seeds, nuts and fish all contain high levels of collagen and elastin forming components. This, plus the oils in protein, help strengthen and maintain healthy skin.

Sun Exposure.

Repeated sun exposure makes the skin lose it’s ability to repair itself.  Too much ultraviolet (UV) exposure breaks down the skin’s collagen and makes it nearly impossible for it to reproduce more. The same goes for the skin’s elastin. Sun-damaged skin becomes loose and have a leather-like appearance.

One of the best skin tightening tips to follow is to use a daily sunscreen that will help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. If you wear makeup on a daily bases, many companies are now including SPF in their foundations. NARS and Laura Mercier now offer SPF 25 Tinted Moisturizer, and Bare Escentuals’ mineral makeup line includes SPF 15 in each of their products.

If you absolutely need to tan, avoid tanning beds and invest in a good self-tanner. They’re much safer and with the rise of skin cancer awareness, many cosmetics companies have come up with new self-tanning formulas that emulate a natural tan. You can find them at drugstores like Walgreens and CVS or high-end retailers like Sephora and department store makeup counters. If you still feel as if you can’t do it yourself, consider a spray tan. Mystic Tans can last up to 10 days.

Smoking.

dont smoke

We already know cigarettes are bad for your health when it comes to the disease risk factor. Some smokers think their habit just increases their risk of dying from one disease or another and that perhaps they’ll beat the odds. What many people don’t know is that smoking cigarettes can speed up the aging process by almost 10 years. Cigarette smoke causes an increase of matrix-metalloproteinases which is the enzyme that breaks down old skin to make place for the new – yet it causes less collagen to be formed in the skin. Clinical studies have also found that smoking destroys vitamin C (ascorbic acid), and this could also be indicated to more wrinkle formation, since collagen can not be formed in the skin if there is a shortage of vitamin C.

Smoking cigarettes is both a psychological habit and physical addiction. It;s not easy to quit, but it can be done. The hardest part about quitting is dealing with the anxiety that comes along with it. The side effects of quitting can begin just four hours after your last cigarette and generally peak at 3 to 5 days. After a couple of weeks, they start fading. The best way to stop smoking is cold-turkey. Not many can do that, so the next best option is to ease your way into it. Start by trying to make a pack last you longer than it usually does. If one pack lasts you a day on average, try stretching it out to 3 days. Continue doing this until you see that one pack is lasting you a week. Once you feel capable of going a day without smoking, quit all together. By then you’ll be more in control of what’s going on.

Skin Firming Creams

Sagging skin can age you just much as wrinkles will. Luckily, there are plenty of skin firming and tightening creams which can help your skin regain its once youthful appearance. That said, when looking for the perfect and best result-producing skin tightening cream, you need to make sure that it contains ingredients which are proven to tighten and firm sagging skin. One of the most sought after and best working ingredients to always be on the look out for is Dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE). The Johnson & Johnson company ran multiple clinical trials to prove DMAE’s firming benefits. The study, which you can find in the Pub Med section of the National Institutes of Health’s monthly newsletter, showed that DMAE did in fact, improve the firmness of the participant’s skin. Lifecell is considered to be the best product that has the Dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) ingredient.
