The original Crème De La Mer was founded by Max Huber, an aerospace physicist, who suffered an accident where he had severe chemical burns. Twelve years later, he completed the formulation of this cream, to help achieve softer, smoother, virtually creaseless looking skin.
Crème De La Mer works to make aging lines and pores less visible.
Stars like Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Aniston have been said to be big fans.
What makes this cream special?
The advertising for this product actually says there is nothing miraculous about the ingredients on their own. What makes this cream unique and effective is the special 3-4 month ‘bio-fermentation process’ the ingredients undergo, and how the ingredients then work synergistically together as a whole.
In fact, the company even admits: “It’s not entirely clear how Crème de la Mer works!”
This is in line with what we’ve found, as while there are certainly some good ingredients here, we weren’t overly-impressed with the ingredient list by itself.
Some of main ingredients:
The spotlight ingredient is seaweed extract. This may provide some good benefits to your skin, which include anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. But as Susan Brawley, professor of plant biology at the university of Maine, points out: “Seaweed extract isn’t a rare, exotic or expensive ingredient.”
Other ingredients include mineral oil and other effective vitamins and anti-oxidants.
Only a small amount of preservatives are needed and placed in this cream, which we like.
If you have very dry skin, this may work well for you.
Interestingly, this cream is also individually hand-filled. We can’t be sure if this gives you any extra specific benefits, but it surely feels more prestigious.
However, this cream comes in jar packaging. So no matter how effective the seaweed extract and anti-oxidants are, they become unstable when exposed.
One of the drawbacks to this crème is that it contains eucalyptus oil, which can be irritating for all skin types. It also contains Kathon CG, another irritating ingredient that is actually recommended for use only in products that are intended to be rinsed off.
